    Entrepreneurial Orientation as a main Resource and Capability on Small Firm’s Growth

    This research provides a useful framework for identifying a small firms’ propensity to engage in entrepreneurial orientation. We examine the impact of the Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) as a main resource and capability on small firm' growth. The growth seems to come out as an important demonstration of the entrepreneurial orientation of small firms (Davidsson, 1989; Green and Brown, 1997; Janney and Gregory, 2006). Thus, this research builds on prior conceptual research that suggests a positive integration between entrepreneurial orientation and resource-based view. In the first instance, the research will focus on reviewing literature in the emerging area of entrepreneurial orientation as it applies to growth oriented small firms and resource-based view of the firm. Secondly, an empirical study was developed based on a stratified sample of small firms of manufacturing industry. Data were submitted to a multivariate statistical analysis and a linear regression model was performed in order to predict the influence of the resources and capabilities on small firms' growth. In this sense, we consider the construct growth as a dependent variable and the ones relates with resources and capabilities (entrepreneur resources, firm resources, networks and EO) as independent variables. The research results suggest a set of resources and capabilities that promote the growth of the small firms. Also, the EO seems to have a predictive value on growth. Explaining variables related with resources and capabilities and EO were identified as essential in growth oriented small firms. It was still possible to conclude that the entrepreneurial firms which grew seem to have resources and develop more capabilities and take advantage in the search for those competences. This attitude reflects on the EO of the firm. This study has important implication for both researchers and practitioners. It highlights the necessity of firms to develop superior EO of all their members and also to invest on better resources and consequently superior capabilities as a way of reaching higher levels of growth. While previous authors have attempted to analyse certain aspects of this process (linkage between entrepreneurial orientation and growth), this research developed a framework that combines these and others factors (resource-based view) pertinent to growth oriented small firms. The results support the necessity to identify explicative variables of multiple levels to explain the growth of small firms.     Consumer behaviour research is the scientific study of the processes consumers use to select, secure, use and dispose of products and services that satisfy their needs. Firms can satisfy those needs only to the extent that they understand their customers. The main objective of this paper is to study the gender differences in consumer buying behaviour of a Portuguese population when they go shopping to buy apparel products. To attain this objective a survey was developed and administered across Portugal.     Background: A fuzzy obesity index (MAFOI) for use as an alternative to bariatric surgery indication (BSI) is presented. The search for a more accurate method to evaluate obesity and to indicate a better treatment is important in the world health context. BMI (body mass index) is considered the main criteria for obesity treatment and BSI. Nevertheless, the fat excess related to the percentage of Body Fat (%BF) is actually the principal harmful factor in obesity disease that is usually neglected. This paper presents a new fuzzy mechanism for evaluating obesity by associating BMI with %BF that yields a fuzzy obesity index for obesity evaluation and treatment and allows building up a Fuzzy Decision Support System (FDSS) for BSI. Methods: Seventy-two patients were evaluated for both BMI and %BF. These data are modified and treated as fuzzy sets. Afterwards, the BMI and %BF classes are aggregated yielding a new index (MAFOI) for input linguistic variable are considered the BMI and %BF, and as output linguistic variable is employed the MAFOI, an obesity classification with entirely new classes of obesity in the fuzzy context as well as is used for BSI. Results: There is gradual, smooth obesity classification and BSI when using the proposed fuzzy obesity index when compared with other traditional methods for dealing with obesity.
Conclusion: The BMI is not adequate for surgical indication in all the conditions and fuzzy logic becomes an alternative for decision making in bariatric surgery indication based on the MAFOI

    MODELLING TOURISM DEMAND: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS AND THE BOX-JENKINS METHODOLOGY

    This study seeks to investigate and highlight the usefulness of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) methodology as an alternative to the Box-Jenkins methodology in analysing tourism demand. To this end, each of the above-mentioned methodologies is centred on the treatment, analysis and modelling of the tourism time series: “Nights Spent in Hotel Accommodation per Month”, recorded in the period from January 1987 to December 2006, since this is one of the variables that best expresses effective demand. The study was undertaken for the North and Centre regions of Portugal. The results showed that the model produced by using the ANN methodology presented satisfactory statistical and adjustment qualities, suggesting that it is suitable for modelling and forecasting the reference series, when compared with the model produced by using the Box?Jenkins methodology.Artificial Neural Networks; ARIMA Models; Time Series Forecasting

    GResilient index to assess the greenness and resilience of the automotive supply chain

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to suggest an Index entitled GResilient Index to assess the greenness and resilience of the automotive companies and corresponding supply chain. Design/methodology/approach: An integrated assessment model is proposed based on Green and Resilient practices. These practices are weighted according to their importance to the automotive supply chain competitiveness. The Delphi technique is used to obtain the weights for the focused supply chain paradigms and corresponding practices. The model is then tested using a case study approach in the automotive supply chain. Findings: The case study results confirmed the applicability of this Index in a real-world supply chain. The results show that the Resilient supply chain management paradigm is the one considered as the one that more contributes for the automotive supply chain competitiveness. Research limitations/implications: The proposed Index was developed in the automotive sector context therefore it could not be adjusted to a different one. Future research could consider other aggregation methods for the Index construction. Practical implications: Supply chain participants will be able to evaluate the performance of their companies or supply chain in terms of Green and Resilient paradigms. Also, the Index can be effectively employed for functional benchmarking among competing companies and supply chains.Green; resilient; supply chain management; index; automotive industry

    Em vĂĄrios paĂ­ses, nomeadamente em Portugal, existe uma incidĂȘncia elevada de erros matemĂĄticos nas notĂ­cias de jornais generalistas. De facto, sĂŁo vĂĄrios os autores que salientam que a matemĂĄtica Ă© mal utilizada nas notĂ­cias, apesar de ser essencial na atividade jornalĂ­stica. Este Ă© um problema que, segundo a literatura, se deve tambĂ©m ao baixo nĂ­vel de numeracia dos jornalistas, que se verifica em consequĂȘncia da formação que tĂȘm.Assim, este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os resultados de um estudo no qual se analisou a numeracia de alunos de um curso de CiĂȘncias da Comunicação. Investigou-se se o nĂ­vel de numeracia Ă© adequado Ă s necessidades de um jornalista e, alĂ©m disso, se a formação matemĂĄtica do curso superior contribui para uma melhoria da aplicação de competĂȘncias bĂĄsicas.Os resultados indicam que os nĂ­veis de numeracia dos alunos sĂŁo inferiores ao que Ă© necessĂĄrio para o trabalho jornalĂ­stico e ainda sugerem que a componente curricular matemĂĄtica do curso nĂŁo contribui para o aumento do nĂ­vel de numeracia.There is a high incidence of mathematical errors on the newspapers articles of several countries, namely in Portugal. Actually, several authors point out that mathematics is misused in the news, although it is essential in such context. This problem, according to American authors, is also due to the low numeracy level of journalists, which follows as a result of the training they have.Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present the results of a study that investigates the numeracy of students attending a Communication Sciences course. First, the study assess if the numeracy levels of the students match the needs of a journalist, in terms of applicability of mathematical skills. Secondly it aims to evaluate if the mathematical training that students have during the course contributes to improve numeracy.The results indicate that the students numeracy levels are lower than what is necessary for journalistic work, and that the mathematics curricular component of the course appears not to contribute to the improvement of numeracy level

    Maths in the news: uses and errors in Portuguese newspapers

    The authors present a quantitative content analysis to assess the use ofmathematical information in the news of five generalist Portuguesenewspapers during a three-month period. Misuses of mathematics werealso studied in this context. Results show that only a small percentage ofthe news articles have mathematical information when compared toprevious studies in the field. Furthermore, over 30% of the news articlescontaining mathematical information have some type of mathematicalerror. Different categories of errors are defined and reasons why thesemight occur are discussed
